DFDS adds rail connection between Nuremberg and Trieste

DFDS is further strengthening its supply chain services with a new rail connection between Nuremberg and Trieste. In combination with DFDS’ ferry and logistics activities, the Danish company can now offer an even wider transport infrastructure between Turkey and Europe. The new connection is operated in cooperation with Çobantur Boltas.

We will reduce emissions by 45 % from 2008 to 2030 through upgrades to existing vessels. New hull coating on four of our new Jinling vessels is expected to reduce our annual C02 emissions by 10,000 tons.

DFDS increases sailings on Estonia – Sweden route

From 4 October, there will be two daily departures on Paldiski – Kapellskär nearly every day. Patria Seaways will be moved to the route from the Paldiski – Hanko route, which will be closed due to unsatisfactory volumes.

Climate Plan involves all of DFDS

DFDS to phase out fossil fuels

By 2050, DFDS will replace fossil fuel with the new generation of zero emission fuel. The long-term tonnage adaption plan is one of three tracks in our DFDS climate plan. It focuses on our new generation of ships, and the new infrastructure that it will require.

Agreement keeps Oslo ferry moving

The Metal Maritime union and DFDS have agreed on a negotiated solution for most employees on the two Oslo ferries. The agreement ensures that the ferries can continue to operate on this route, in spite of the Norwegian quarantine rules causing a decrease in passenger numbers. Regretfully, 26 servers will be redundant.

DFDS develops ambitious climate plan

We want to become climate neutral by 2050 and are aiming for a relative reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by close to 45% from 2008 to 2030. That corresponds to an approximate reduction of 25-35% between 2019 and 2030. These are the main goals in DFDS’ new climate action plan.

DFDS adapts Northern Baltic ferry services to pandemic

Due to lower demand, DFDS reduces the number of weekly sailings on the Paldiski-Hanko ferry route. This frees up ferry capacity, which DFDS will use to improve its schedule for for the Paldiski-Kapellskär route where customer demand remains stable. DFDS has also entered into an agreement on conditions for booking transport on demand for DFDS’ customers on Eckerö Line’s Muuga-Vuosaari (Tallinn-Helsinki) route to enhance freight services between Estonia and Finland.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, the Amsterdam-Newcastle ferry route will be temporarily suspended. Latest sailings will be on 21 March from Amsterdam and 22 March from Newcastle. DFDS is in consultation with crews on board and staff ashore about the temporary effects on employment.

DFDS continues Brexit preparations

DFDS’ main Brexit focus is now on informing small and medium sized companies about how they can and need to prepare for Brexit.

The CO2-neutral biofuel can be used in ships, and DFDS and MASH are currently working on a plan to prepare the biofuel for testing in one of their ship’s engines.

DFDS invests in biofuel developer MASH Energy

The start-up company MASH Energy ApS produces bio-oil from agricultural waste. The CO2 neutral biofuel can be used in ships, and the residual product is an effective fertiliser. With its investment of up to DKK 10 million, DFDS is now co-owner of the company and co-responsible for developing a commercially viable alternative to fossil fuels. The plan is to work towards testing the fuel on a DFDS vessel.

INVESTMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE FOR MEDITERRANEAN ROUTE NETWORK

DFDS will in 2019 invest DKK 300m to install scrubbers on 12 freight ferries deployed on freight routes in the Mediterranean between Turkey, Italy, Greece and France. The investment will ensure compliance with the new global rules that from 2020 aims to reduce sulphur emissions through limiting sulphur content in marine fuel oil to 0.5% or through other means, such as scrubbers, with at least a similar environmental effect.
